Hunt’s Guide to Fizz

Hunt’s Guide to Fizz

June is for bubbles at Hunts and it also holds the English wine week (16th-23rd June). As we welcome the warmth we are treated to start of the UK summer sporting calendar (including the bit of the Euro’s that England feature in), strawberries, and sunshine - nothing compliments it all better than sparkling wine.

A lengthy debate in the Hunts office has started over the best fizz and so please find below a guide to some of our favourite English and French sparkling wines.

Court Garden’s Classic Cuvee

Grown in Ditchling by family friends of Alex. This wine is toasty, fresh and brilliant value. Alex has picked the grapes for previous vintages and thinks it is best sipped in his native Sussex, underneath the South Downs but also works well just about everywhere. The Blanc de Blanc is also very good.

Pol Roger, Reserve Brut Champagne

Churchill’s favourite and aged in cooler cellars than others in the region, it is rich and crisp. Despite being widely available, it tends to be bought by those in the know over other big champagne houses. Pol Roger has a big connection with the Royal Family and British Army Regiments. It even produces bottles for certain Regiments with crests on the neck collar. Something to toast the King's Birthday parade with on 8th June.

Woodchester Valley, Cotswold Classic

Produced by our friends and fellow sponsor of the Cotswold Christmas fair, the Cotswold Classic is 50% Seyval Blanc which gives it a mid-palate structure and balance. The Reserve Cuvee is also outstanding and a firm favourite.

Les Pionniers Non Vintage, Co-Op

An award winning champagne produced by a very well known champagne house for the Co-Op (think Pied for a clue). It is remarkable value for the quality and handily available next door to the showroom. For a real treat you will find the Vintage version in better classes of Co-Op (think Chipping Norton).

Finally, for real impact try opening your bottle outside with a Champagne Saber (or back of a knife) for an added bit of flare.
